Make-Do Mystery 2009

Here's the first challenge: to try and make this quilt entirely from stash! Really. It can be done. And the second challenge? It's a two color scrappy quilt. Any two colors that you choose to use - one of the colors must be white or black i.e. red and white or blue and black etc.

This will be a 6 part mystery so you will have all the directions for this quilt by November.

Finished quilt size is 80" x 80", but absolutely could be made bigger with the addition of another border or two. Fabric requirements (I'm going to call them "background" and "main". You decide which of your colors is which.

Background: a total of 3 5/8 yards.
Main: a total of 4 1/4 yards

PART ONE:
1. Cut 4 - 13" squares of Background fabric
2. Cut 4 - 13" squares of Main fabric
3. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the Background squares
4. Layer each Background square with a Main square, right sides together
5. Sew a scant 1/4" seam on each side of the drawn line
6. Cut apart on the drawn line
7. Press seams to one side
8. Trim squares to 12 1/2". You should now have 8 squares


PART TWO:

1. Cut 2 - 13½” squares of background fabric. Cut twice diagonally.
2. Cut 2 - 13½” squares of dark fabric. Cut twice diagonally.
3. Sew all background triangles to the dark triangles.
4. Press carefully (you’re working with bias edges) towards the dark. You should
now have 8 half squares.
5. Sew each half square to another along the long edge. Press seams to one side
carefully.
6. Trim blocks to 12½”. You should have 4 – “Four X” blocks.
Yippee!!! You have finished Part Two!!

PART THREE:

Cutting:
Background: 8 – 5” squares then cut once diagonally
16 - 2½ x 4½” rectangles
4 - 4½” squares
Main: 8 – 5” squares then cut once diagonally
16 - 2½ x 4½” rectangles
Piecing:
1. Pair each background triangle with a main triangle wrong sides together. Sew a ¼” seam
on the long side. Press towards the darker of the two fabrics. Trim to 4½”.
2. Pair each background rectangle with a main rectangle wrong sides together. Sew a ¼”
seam on one of the long sides. Press towards the darker of the two fabrics. This should
measure 4½” square.
3. Lay out the rows:
4. Sew each row together using a scant ¼” seam. Press in the direction of the arrows. Sew
rows together. Press toward the center row. Your blocks should measure 12½”.
